• Sound Velocity (SV) is the speed of acoustic waves in a medium. In this case, the medium in question is water.

• The speed of acoustic waves in seawater varies both horizontally and vertically at any time.

• Sound Velocity in water is strongly influenced by temperature, salinity, and depth of water. The difference in sound velocity causes the water column to look like a “layer cake”.
